Me neither. The goal of love is to stop peoples suffering so there lies the dichotomy. I think that self-inflicted pain like penance doesn't serve a purpose, I think it is in giving up something to help others is the virtue. I think the virtue in the Priests suffering demonstrated his faith to others and also showed there is joy in any situation if you have God. In this he gave something in his suffering, and it showed the loving virtue of his soul.
