The Creators Of 'Paranormal Activity' Are Making A New Terrifying Series
In 2016, fans of horror and suspense had their pick with series full of exorcisms (Outcast, The Exorcist), creepypasta stories (Channel Zero) and the return of American Horror Story.
It was the same on the big screen, and it doesn’t seem like Hollywood is even close to slowing down on horror film productions. And now, even more good news: it sounds like the makers of Paranormal Activity are developing a new series based on paranormal activities that have been kept secret for decades.
The series is going to be called Phenomena and will be based on the book Phenomena: The Secret History of the U.S. Government’s Investigations Into Extrasensory Perception and Psychokinesis.
The book is a collection of years of research carried out by journalist Annie Jacobsen, who was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2016. Jacobsen is mostly known for her work on the mysterious Area 51, which she summarized in her book Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base.
In Phenomena, Jacobsen investigates the top secret research and psychological experiments the U.S. government, army, and C.I.A. did on human guinea pigs.
In writing the book, Jacobsen pulled information from documents that were eventually made public, and she gathered testimony from over fifty people involved in the testing.
The masters of paranormal.
The book focuses primarily on experiments that were designed to study our brain’s capacity for extrasensory perception like telepathy, clairvoyance, clairaudience, retrocognition, and prescience.
And of course, near-death experiences are also included, which is a theme that’s already appeared on Netflix in the amazing series The OA.
acobsen’s book, published via Little, Brown and Company, doesn’t come out until March 28, 2017. However, Blumhouse Productions is already working on adapting a script for television.
Blumhouse is the production company who brought us the terrifying Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Purge sagas. For the current project, they’re collaborating with Amblin Entertainment. The two companies already worked together in 2012 for the show The River on ABC.
For now, Phenomena hasn’t been picked up by any particular network. We also don’t know whether it will be presented as a serial or something more like a documentary series or mockumentary.
But it seems like we’ve finally found a good follow up to J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi series Fringe, four years later.
